A similar flag with three white stars instead of the cross was adopted on December 10, 1923, following the proclamation of the Kingdom of Egypt. The 1952 revolt established the Arab Liberation Flag, which had red-white-black horizontal stripes and a gold eagle. That flag was often flown beside the national flag but did not itself have official status; nevertheless, its design was reflected in the official 1958 national flag of the United Arab Republic, where the golden eagle was replaced by two green stars to symbolize the union of Egypt and Syria. It was anticipated that the number of stars would increase as other Arab states joined the union.
